Bandung, lpik.itb.ac.id – Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) achieved a significant milestone in its patent-filing efforts, with 15 patent titles granted at the Patent One Stop Service event organised by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia.
The Patent One Stop Service, or Integrated Patent Service, is a patent application service programme. It was held for the first time in West Java in early 2024 at the West Java Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. The programme is a positive step toward improving the resolution of patent applications in Indonesia, particularly for higher-education institutions, research and development institutions, and businesses throughout the country.
The event was attended by representatives of higher-education institutions in West Java. ITB participated actively and had the opportunity to receive technical guidance on completing substantive examinations for 15 patent titles. The guidance was conducted online from 8–12 January 2024. The programme continued with a series of seminars and the in-person presentation of granted-patent certificates to the relevant inventors on 30–31 January 2024 at the West Java Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
Although the patents have been granted, this achievement does not automatically guarantee commercial success. The importance of patents as a means of protecting research outputs and innovations is increasingly emphasised in the context of technological development in Indonesia. The granting of ITB's patents is expected to strengthen their legal status. This legal status is expected to increase opportunities for collaboration with industry through licensing schemes and to enable startups, including those supported by ITB, to make direct use of them.
