ITB at the ASEAN TISC Forum: Strengthening Innovation Cooperation in the Region

Bandung, dkst.itb.ac.id – Siem Reap, Cambodia, is hosting two important agendas aimed at strengthening the intellectual property-based innovation ecosystem in the ASEAN region. On 25-28 February 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in collaboration with the Cambodian Department of Intellectual Property and support from the Japan Funds-in-Trust Industrial Property Global/Japan Patent Office, held Regional Training Seminar on Institutional IP Policies for ASEAN TISCs and TTOs as well as ASEAN TISC Regional Meeting.

The Bandung Institute of Technology also took part in this strategic agenda, represented by Ikhsan Prasetyo from the Technology Transfer team, ITB Regional Directorate of Science and Technology (DKST). Its presence represents ITB's commitment to supporting strengthening institutional capacity in the field of intellectual property management and technology transfer.

The training seminar held over the first two days focused on the development and implementation of adaptive and sustainable institutional intellectual property policies. Through a case study-based approach, group discussions, and expert presentations, participants explore crucial principles such as ownership of innovation results, incentive mechanisms for researchers, and management of conflicts of interest that are in line with the spirit of academic collaboration.

The agenda continued with the TISC ASEAN Regional Meeting, which confirmed the collective commitment of member countries in expanding access to technology and innovation support services. In this forum, it is officially formed ASEAN TISC Network Task Force, a task force aimed at coordinating TISC capacity development strategies cross-country.

The active participation of representatives from Indonesia, including from ITB, shows that universities are not only centers of knowledge, but also as driving forces for technological transformation through professional IP governance.

DKST ITB's participation in this activity reflects the strategic position of higher education institutions in building a national innovation infrastructure that is integrated with regional initiatives. Apart from expanding cooperation networks, this forum is also a place to exchange best practices in IP management which has an impact on improving the quality and sustainability of research.

"This agenda provides a new perspective for us at ITB to continue to strengthen internal policies that are responsive to the dynamics of global innovation," said Ikhsan

With Indonesia becoming increasingly integrated into the ASEAN innovation network, DKST ITB is committed to continuing to encourage synergy between academia, industry and government in order to create a superior and highly competitive research and innovation ecosystem.
