BANDUNG, dkst.itb.ac.id – The Directorate of Science and Technology Parks (DKST) at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) held the Second Workshop on Technology Valuation Development and Implementation. This collaborative initiative aims to refine mechanisms for assessing the commercial viability of university research innovations before introducing them to industry and society.
Fathiro Hutama Reksa Putra, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Deputy Director for Business Incubation and Acceleration at DKST ITB, attended on behalf of the Director of DKST ITB. He emphasized the institution’s continuing responsibility to serve as a key enabler of research commercialization in Indonesia. He noted that research innovations have often been assessed solely according to their technological maturity, or Technology Readiness Level (TRL).
“Yet the ultimate goal is to make that technology applicable and commercially viable. The ability to assess its economic potential therefore becomes an essential new institutional capability,” Fathiro said in his opening remarks.
In practice, the valuation process requires formal, standardized assessment instruments. Sigit Purwanto, S.T., M.T., Head of the Subdirectorate of Programs, Monitoring, and Evaluation at DKST ITB, explained that his team is developing an internal technology valuation model using standard theoretical approaches, including cost-based, market-based, and income-based methods.
To validate the assessment format and the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) documents being prepared, the workshop brought in professional insights from public appraisal practitioner Lusi Augerah, with Prof. Nyoman moderating the session. This expert review is important for evaluating ITB’s Technology Valuation Assessment Form, which had previously been tested by three inventors as an implementation sample.
In addition to gathering input on data requirements and risk analysis, the event brought together researchers, leaders of supported startups, and representatives of directorates across ITB.
The valuation documents refined through this workshop will serve as a baseline for ITB’s initial commercialization discussions with industry partners. By establishing credible mechanisms, DKST ITB hopes to make the process of bringing research outcomes to market more measurable and to generate tangible economic benefits for society.
